November 26, 2007Dave Grohl: 'Kurt Cobain Was One Of The Funniest People I've Met'He dispels some myths...
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl says that despite his problems with drugs and depression, Kurt Cobain was one of the funniest people he has ever met. Grohl was speaking about the recording of Nirvana’s legendary MTV Unplugged session, available on DVD on Monday, and said that Cobain was continuously cracking jokes off camera. The former Nirvana drummer said: “I remember it seemed like he was having a good time because a lot of talk between songs was hilariously funny “I don’t know how many people realise it but Kurt was one of the funniest people I have ever met.” Bassist Krist Novoselic said of the magical night in November 1993: “The show has an aura of its own. Kurt’s death was a huge media event and that unplugged performance turned into this kind of requiem.” He continued to The Sun: “Kurt was in compelling form. He had that energy for expression. There was something about him. You can hear it and you can see it (on the DVD).” Related Groups:

The light before the darkLEAVESDEN, HERTFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND -- The Harry Potter series will lighten up on the darkness and turn into a romantic comedy for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. That is the word on set at Leavesden Studios, where the Potter franchise has established its own world, and its permanent sets, for the decade-long production of all seven movies. Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Granger, and Rupert Grint, who plays Ron Weasley, are delighted about the comic touch on Half-Blood. Daniel Radcliffe, as Harry Potter himself, is not as keen. Instead, he is eager to skip to the dark finale, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, due in 2010. "We've got a long haul ahead of us!" the charming yet eternally serious Radcliffe says when Sun Media wishes him luck on the current shoot. When I mention that "everyone's delighted" to have a tonal shift from the brooding atmosphere of The Order of the Phoenix, Radcliffe smiles and says: "Everyone's 'not' delighted to be on this!" He is referring to himself. "I think the script's great and I think it's going to be a really great film. But I'm just one of those people that, in what I'm doing, I always lean toward the dark side and I really enjoy doing the dark stuff. "I know Emma and Rupert really, really like the lighter stories and all that. And Rupert particularly is really going to have a field day on this, because he's got fantastic comic timing and he'll be able to use all of that to great effect on this film with his relationship with Lavender Brown. "(But) I'm actually going to miss doing all the morbid stuff, I think." So he is eager for film seven. "That's the one last hurrah, that film. That's going to be great. I really am very, very excited about the whole thing. It's going to be epic, I hope." Watson likes Hermione going forward. "I think Hermione has a massive part to play in Harry's success. She teaches him that the only way of defeating Voldemort is through trusting his friends and having his friends (at his side). Cutting himself off from them makes him vulnerable because he has more to lose but less (vulnerable) because he has more to fight for and they can help him through it." While Half-Blood does have dark passages it will emphasize the romantic entanglements. "Every film has its own sort of atmosphere," says Grint. "This one, it's really, really cool. I'm looking forward to this one. "It's got sort of a dark undertone to it because Voldemort is back and that is quite a scary time for them. But there are some really cool bits in it. Ron gets a girlfriend in it, so that's going to be quite cool." Producer David Hayman says the humour in Half-Blood will be "slightly warmer" than seen in Potter before. "It's much more comedy and the awkwardness of romance. And the romance goes beyond Harry into Hermione and Ron and other characters. I also think it's about characters growing apart as well as realizing the importance of one another." As for the Half-Blood script, written before J.K. Rowling released the final book, only one change had to be made once Deathly Hallows went public. There was an awkward reference to Dumbledore's wand, Hayman says. "For obvious reasons (if you've read the seventh book) it had to be changed."

Toby Jones Talks Dobby In "Deathly Hallows"
Actor Toby Jones, who provides his voice to the digitally created character of Dobby in the “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” film, is the subject of a new interview online from MTV. In this interview, Mr. Jones discusses his desire to again give his voice to the house elf in the seventh film, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” and of the massive effort that it takes to create the character seen on the screen. On this subject he says: “I can only take a certain amount of credit for inhabiting Dobby, because clearly these brilliant people at Industrial Light and Magic have created Dobby and I just voiced the character. [But] am always amazed and flattered at how much that character has endured even though he hasn’t been in any films for a while. Every time a book comes out people phone me, and write to me from around the world saying ‘He’s in! He is in!’” Mr. Jones goes on to comment on his hopes for a return for “Deathly Hallows” saying, in part, “It would be fun.” He continues on this subject, speaking directly about certain events which involve his character in the seventh Harry Potter novel in the rest of the interview, which you can read right here. A caution for those still wishing to avoid “Deathly Hallows” spoilers, this article does contain them.

Spank Rock hurls a glass at Jared LetoThere’s been ill feelings festering away between Naeem of Spank Rock and emo-king/actor Jared Leto for some time, and it all came to a head at the recent MTV Woodie Awards in Canada when the notoriously capricious Baltimore MC chucked a glass at the 30 Seconds To Mars frontman. It could be said that Leto – who has been given the title “King of Douche” thanks to his self-absorbed parading and egocentric antics in 30 Seconds To Mars – is a pretty easy target, and since the incident blogs have been going ga-ga. None of them seem to be able to explain exactly why Naeem felt the need to hurl the glass at Leto in the first place. Some have said that it stemmed from El-P talking trash about Spank Rock’s new 2 Live Crew-inspired EP ‘Bangers & Cash’ backstage at the awards… but what exactly does that have with Jared Leto? Who knows! Video of the incident has, unremarkably, made it onto the web, with the YouTube clip below documenting the whole skirmish. Source: http://www.inthemix.com.au

Harry Potter film on location in Surbiton
Scenes for the latest Harry Potter film are being shot at Surbiton train station this weekend. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, starring Daniel Radcliffe as boy wizard Harry, will be on location overnight from Friday to Sunday. Café Chaud on platforms one and two at the station is reportedly being used in the movie. Filming for the sixth book in the Harry Potter series, which has made author JK Rowling a multi-millionaire, has only recently begun. Seargeant Christopher MacKellaich, of the British Transport Police, said: "We will have officers down at the station on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night to assist with any public order issues associated with the filming. "They are going to be filming overnight from late evening to the early morning and we will have six or seven officers down there each night." Kingston Council said there would be no road closures in place during filming. In a recent interview, 18-year-old Radcliffe said filming was going "really well". "I've just been doing a bit of work with Jim Broadbent who plays Horace Slughorn, who's just fantastic," he told the BBC. "And we've been doing a bit of stuff with me and Rupert (Grint, who plays Ron Weasley). "We haven't done any scenes with all the kids yet in the Great Hall - that's all to look forward to just after Christmas." A spokeswoman for South West Trains said services would be running as normal and that filming would take place when trains stopped for the night. "Our priority is to operate a train service, not a Hollywood film set," she said.

Rumor Alert: Madonna's Daughter a Half-Blood Princess?
Despite the formal press release earlier this week from Warner Bros stating that casting is now complete for the upcoming “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” film, UK tabloid The Sun has a new article online tonight involving the sixth Harry Potter movie, and the daughter of pop superstar Madonna. With a headline blaring “She’s Lourdes Voldemort,” the paper reports that: MADONNA’s daughter LOURDES – nicknamed Lola – has been asked to join Harry Potter and his pals battling Lord Voldemort in the next film in the blockbuster series. Warner Brothers approached the 11-year-old – whose dad is fitness trainer Carlos Leon – through Madge…An executive at Warners wanted to cast Lola in the last Potter film and has renewed his interest for the next movie. Lola would love to do it – she is a huge fan. Lourdes was only offered a small part, but it could be her big break.

November 21, 2007How to Report Animal AbuseIntroductionToo many times, people witness animal abuse or neglect and ignore it, feeling like they have no right to get involved with what someone does with an animal. But we all have a stake in the issue. It has been shown that animal abuse often leads to abuse of other people, so reporting animal abuse allows you to help create a less violent society. Read on to learn how to report animal abuse.
InstructionsDifficulty: Moderate
Steps1
Step OneIdentify abuse, neglect and cruelty. Whenever you see an animal, run through a mental checklist. Make sure the animal has food, water and shelter; has a clean pen or area; has no untreated injuries and looks relatively healthy overall. If the animal does not meet these criteria, investigate further. 2
Step TwoIntervene if necessary. If you see a person actively beating or torturing an animal, step in to help the animal, as long as you feel safe doing so. Animal torture is illegal, so you have the right to stop it. 3
Step ThreeTalk to the animal's owner if you feel comfortable doing so, especially if the animal seems neglected. You might find out that the horse you thought was ill-treated has just been rescued off a feedlot, or the dog with the open wounds is receiving medical attention. You might also find that the people lack the resources to provide the best care to their animal, and need financial assistance. 4
Step FourDocument abuse and neglect. Include dates, times and the nature of the problem, even if you just suspect abuse or neglect. Photographs and videotape are helpful, though not necessary. 5
Step FiveCall your local animal control to report most forms of abuse and for neglect. You can find the phone number in the government listing of your phone book, or online. After you provide full details, ask for the animal control officer's name and ask what action will likely be taken. 6
Step SixReport animal torture or animal fighting, such as dog or cock fighting, to the police, as these are crimes. Call 911 if the fighting or torture is in progress. 7
Step SevenFollow up with animal control, especially if you reported directly to them. Talk directly to the investigating officer, if possible. If you are not satisfied with the way she has handled the problem, explain why and request additional action. Tips & Warnings

How to Stop a MySpace Account From Being HackedIntroductionMySpace has of late been used quite frequently by spammers that go to lengths just to hack your account and post comments and bulletins to your friends with their products. I have friends who go through this every week and they still don't get how this happens and how they can stop it. Here's how you do it.
InstructionsDifficulty: Moderately Easy
Steps1
Step OneMonitor your account closely. If you see a comment on a friend's page or a bulletin that was made from your account but you didn't post, then there's definitely something phishy going on...(sorry, just had to do it). 2
Step TwoDelete all comments and/or bulletins you didn't post to save your friends some headache. Then immediately change the password for your account. If you have the same password for your MySpace account as for the email you use to login, then change it for your email account as well because the hackers can access your email as well if that is the case. 3
Step Three
To avoid getting hacked you have to know how they do it. The most common way it's done is when you click on a link in a bulletin or comment and it takes you to a screen that looks exactly like the MySpace login page. The only thing is that it isn't the MySpace login page, and if you look closely you can tell. 4
Step FourWhat happens is when you re-type your login info and click submit it gets sent to the hackers, who then store that info and use it to login to your account and spam your friends' pages.

How to Protect Your Personal Information on MySpaceIntroductionMySpace, the largest social networking site online, is fun and user-friendly. Most likely, you, your friends, family and coworkers all have MySpace pages. However, you should be conscious of what information you post. Your personal information can be compromised easily if you do not take steps to protect it. Follow these steps to learn how to protect your personal information on MySpace:
InstructionsDifficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You'll Need
Steps1
Step OneKeep your personal information to yourself. It is never a good idea to include your full name, birthdate, place of birth, address, phone number, IM screen name, social security number or account numbers on your profile page, emails, instant messages or blog on MySpace. 2
Step TwoCover your tracks. If you are using a public computer or workstation to access your MySpace account, delete temporary Internet files and cookies when you are done. This will prevent anyone from recovering passwords or other information. 3
Step ThreeInstall anti-spyware software on your computer. Spyware is software that gets installed without your knowledge and can monitor your activities. You can find free anti-spyware software online. Use it regularly and delete any spyware you find. 4
Step FourUse your firewall. Many operating systems have a built-in firewall. Make sure you turn it on and update it as needed. Using your firewall will stop hackers from accessing your personal information. 5
Step FiveBe careful about who you communicate with on MySpace. It is easy for users to impersonate whoever they want in an attempt to gain your personal information. Know exactly with whom you are communicating before you reveal anything. 6
Step SixDo not post photos or information on MySpace that you don’t want the world to see. This information is accessible to the public and can be viewed by teachers, police, potential employers and college admissions. 7
Step SevenCheck out MySpace privacy policies. Find out what personal information MySpace collects, uses or provides to third parties. 8
Step EightChange the settings in your Web browser. Open your Internet options (under the tools menu) to use built-in security features and increase your security settings.

How to Keep Children Safe from Internet PredatorsIntroductionThe internet has become a crazed world with online communities such as myspace, friendster and for younger kids club penguin, and within these communities are dangerous predators as well. Here are some tips to keep your children safe regardless of age.
InstructionsDifficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You'll Need
Steps1
Step OneMaintain communication with your kids. Kids younger than seven shouldn't be on the internet unless you have filtered the internet and you are there with them. 2
Step TwoChildren will want to have online accounts, but it is always safer to not let them have any at least until they are in high schoool. If they have online accounts try to have access to it so that you can know who's talking to them. It makes it a little harder for predators to contact them if they know they are not alone online. 3
Step ThreeKnow their friends. If you can't get access to their online accounts, set parental controls on your browser to their age. Also check your browser's history for sites that they visited and ask questions on sites you don't know about or even sites you do know about and want to know what they were doing. 4
Step FourSet limits as to how much time and what sites they can visit and always remind them to never give personal information over the internet no matter what age they are. 5
Step Five
Trust your children. You can monitor there activities, while allowing them to have some freedom a tenth grader might be more reluctant to tell you what they are doing, but if you show that you trust them, they will open up to you.

How to punish a cyber-bullyWhen Megan Meier logged on to MySpace a little over a year ago, she was seeking a new start with new friends. She'd had some hard times: She considered herself overweight, had been bullied in school and had low self-esteem.
Still, things seemed to be getting better. She had just started eighth grade at a new school in Dardenne Prairie, Mo., had lost 20 pounds and made some new friends. Her parents had recently restored her Internet access. (She had lost that privilege when she and a friend had created a secret My- Space page.) Shortly after getting her access back, Megan was contacted on My- Space by a boy named Josh Evans. He said that he was 16, that he was home-schooled and that he recently had moved to nearby O'Fallon. He was a dream: He played the guitar and drums; he was handsome; and he told Megan that he liked her a lot. Josh went into detail about his own difficult life and immediately struck a chord with Megan. For six weeks they corresponded. Then, when her infatuation was at its peak, Megan received a well-planned, well-timed blow. Josh suddenly told her, "I don't know if I want to be friends with you any longer because I heard you're not a very nice friend." Josh then apparently passed her messages on to others, unleashing a torrent of insults from others in an Internet pile-on. She was called fat and a slut. However, according to her father, the last message from Josh was the worst: "Everybody in O'Fallon knows how you are. You are a bad person and everybody hates you. Have a s----y rest of your life. The world would be a better place without you." Megan fell apart. She went to her room, tied a cloth belt around a support beam in her closet and hanged herself. Perhaps the only shock that could rival Megan's death was the news (given to her parents by a neighbor) that Josh had never existed -- he had been created by adults who lived nearby. These neighbors, supposed friends of the Meier family, had apparently laid the trap in retaliation for Megan's treatment of their own daughter, the girl who had created the secret MySpace page with Megan. Megan is only the latest victim of cyber-bullying. In Florida, Jeff Johnston, 15, hanged himself by his book-bag strap in 2005, and in Vermont, Ryan Halligan, 13, hanged himself in 2003 -- both victims of Internet harassment. There are many disturbing aspects of this story, but two are of particular concern to a lawyer. First, Tina and Ron Meier were told that they had no clear legal recourse -- either criminal or civil. It is not a crime to be cruel and immature. Although there is a new law passed by the last Congress criminalizing the use of the Internet to "annoy," it is a poorly written statute that is extremely likely to be challenged on constitutional grounds. Other well-established charges, such as child endangerment and other predatory crimes, would be hard to prove in this case. There are civil charges that could conceivably be brought, such as negligence or intentional infliction of emotional distress, but the Meiers are running out of time to file. Although the law generally holds landowners liable for "attractive nuisances" they create that lure kids into dangerous conditions, there is no comparable law on the books for cyber-based lures. A second disturbing aspect of the case is that the alleged culprits did not even face public scrutiny or stigma for their actions. The local newspaper refused to publish the name of the family responsible for the e-mails out of consideration, it said, for their young daughter. Other news outlets, such as Fox and CNN, followed suit, running stories that also withheld the names. In other words, simply because they had a child, the alleged perpetrators were given the benefit of anonymity. The decision to protect the family's identity was particularly strange because they are involved in a pending criminal case against Ron Meier after he allegedly caused about $1,000 damage to their lawn by driving a truck across it in the weeks after Megan's death. The Meier case is an example of a growing trend on the part of the media toward omitting names or identifying information from the public because of paternalistic concerns. In one particularly alarming case, the Washington Post in 2000 withheld the race of a man who had stabbed an 8-year-old to death in his grandmother's frontyard. Living near the crime scene in Alexandria and worried for our own children, my wife and I searched the newspaper for a description of the killer still at large. We were given the person's height and general description but not his race -- because the newspaper generally declines to publish the race of criminal suspects. Thus, we did not know that Gregory Murphy was African American because the Post did not want to foster racial stereotypes. The media also routinely decline to name victims in rape cases, even when the accuser is subsequently discredited. For example, after an investigation cleared the Duke lacrosse players, the media still refused to publish their accuser's name under some twisted protection policy for false victims. This week -- more than a year after Megan Meier's death -- the names of the neighbors were finally disclosed in published accounts. The disclosure was largely the result of pressure from bloggers, who do not feel bound by the rules of mainstream newspapers and networks and who have been meting out their own form of Internet justice. The neighbors are Lori and Curt Drew, according to news reports. The Drews' daughter was certainly dealt a bad hand by her parents. However, the media puts itself on a slippery slope when it starts to protect accused wrongdoers on behalf of their progeny, offering a free pass for alleged predators who procreate. It seems clear that the Drews did not want to kill Megan or even hurt her physically. They are not the first to be grotesquely transformed by a new technology that offers easy availability and anonymity to its users. Yet, if cyber-traps are to be deterred, there must be avenues to guarantee both forms of private relief and public record. Megan never knew the true identity of those who trapped her, but the people of Dardenne Prairie have a right to know. Jonathan Turley is a law professor at George Washington Law School.

Parents of MySpace hoax victim seek justiceBy Mike Celizic

‘No apologies’ over teen who hanged herself over failed romance, kin say
CNN image via YouTube
The parents of a 13-year-old Missouri girl who hanged herself after a failed MySpace romance — later uncovered as a hoax — say they have yet to receive an apology from the family they blame for their daughter’s death. “They’ve absolutely offered no apologies,” Ron Meier told TODAY co-host Matt Lauer on Monday. “They sent us a letter in the mail, basically saying that they might feel a little bit of responsibility, but they don’t feel no guilt or remorse or anything for what they did.” Rather, said Tina Meier, the people are upset with her for going public with their story. Last week, while shopping, she ran into the woman who invented the hoax, Tina Meier said. “She asked me to stop doing all of this,” she told Lauer. “I told her that we would not stop, that we were going to continue for justice for Megan because we knew what they did.” The Meiers’ daughter, Megan, hanged herself Oct. 16, 2006. The Meiers have not named the people because they do not want to identify their teenage daughter, who had once been a friend of Megan’s. After the two girls had a falling out, the mother invented a 16-year-old boy, “Josh Evans,” created a MySpace account for him, and made Megan believe he was new in town and thought she was cool. ‘Oh, Mom, you don’t understand’ “That was always the talk,” Tina Meier told Lauer, repeating the conversations she had with her daughter: “‘Megan, c’mon, we don’t even know this person. Let’s not get too excited.’ She’d say, ‘Oh, Mom, you don’t understand.’ So I did talk to her daily about that. But children at this age, they don’t think that.” And then the boy turned on Megan, leading a campaign of vilification and online name-calling that ended when Megan took her own life. For a year, the Meiers kept quiet at the request of both the FBI and local law enforcement officials while they investigated the incident. Ultimately, investigators told the Meiers that while the hoax was cruel, it was not criminal. ‘Continue to monitor your children’ “We are still continuing on with the fight on the criminal and the civil side,” said Ron Meier. The family’s story is, Tina Meier told Lauer, a cautionary tale about the trouble that lies in wait for kids on the Internet, a tale made more painful because they had monitored their daughter’s Internet use closely and had talked to her about “Josh” and the events that ended so tragically. “It was monitored highly,” Tina Meier said of her daughter’s MySpace account. “We had the password. She couldn’t sign on without us. We had to be in the room” when she was online. They have not filed a civil suit against the people who invented Josh, but are not ruling that out. And they also want to warn other parents and children to beware of people online who claim to be their friends. “Continue to monitor your children,” Tina Meier told Lauer. “Take an extra step. Ask the question. Look at their computers, know what they’re doing. To kids, don’t trust anybody online that you do not know is your true friend.” Tina Meier has said that she doesn’t think anyone involved intended for her daughter to kill herself. ‘Absolutely vile’ Tina Meier said law enforcement officials told her the case did not fit into any law. But sheriff’s officials have not closed the case and pledged to consider new evidence if it emerges. Megan Meier was described as a “bubbly, goofy” girl who loved spending time with her friends, watching movies and fishing with her dad. Megan had been on medication, but had been upbeat before her death, her mother said, after striking up a relationship on MySpace with Josh Evans about six weeks before her death. Josh told her he was born in Florida and had recently moved to the nearby community of O’Fallon. He said he was home-schooled, and didn’t yet have a phone number in the area to give her. Megan’s parents said she received a message from him on Oct. 15 of last year, essentially saying he didn’t want to be her friend anymore, that he had heard she wasn’t nice to her friends. Megan seemed upset Someone using Josh’s account was sending cruel messages. Then, Megan called her mother, saying electronic bulletins were being posted about her, saying things like “Megan Meier is a slut. Megan Meier is fat.” Megan’s mother, who monitored her daughter’s online communications, returned home and said she was shocked at the vulgar language her own daughter was sending. She told her daughter how upset she was about it. Megan ran upstairs, and her father, Ron, tried to tell her everything would be fine. About 20 minutes later, she was found in her bedroom. She died the next day.
Her father said he found a message the next day from Josh, which he said law enforcement authorities have not been able to retrieve. It told the girl she was a bad person and the world would be better without her, he has said. Another parent, who learned of the MySpace account from her own daughter, who had access to the Josh profile, told Megan’s parents about the hoax in a counselor’s office about six weeks after Megan died. That’s when they learned Josh was imaginary, they said. Creator of fake account not charged The mother from down the street told police that she, her daughter and another person all typed and monitored the communication between the fictitious boy and Megan. A person who answered the door at the family’s house told an Associated Press reporter on Friday afternoon that they had been advised not to comment. Megan’s parents had been storing a foosball table for the family that created the MySpace character. Six weeks after Megan’s death, they learned the other family had created the profile and responded by destroying the foosball table, dumping it on the neighbors’ driveway and encouraging them to move away. Megan’s parents are now separated and plan to divorce. Aldermen in Dardenne Prairie, a community of about 7,000 residents about 35 miles from St. Louis, have proposed a new ordinance related to child endangerment and Internet harassment. It could come before city leaders on Wednesday. “Is this enough?” Mayor Pam Fogarty said Friday. “No, not by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s something, and you have to start somewhere.”
