SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — Leslie Simon, 28, is the co-author (with Trevor Kelley) of the book "Everybody Hurts: An Essential Guide to Emo Culture." Simon, of Shaker Heights, is also the managing editor of Cleveland-based Alternative Press magazine. For the uninitiated, emo is a style of popular music with roots in punk rock that listeners deem "emotional." Bands such as Dashboard Confessional and My Chemical Romance are considered the most popular emo bands. Simon recently answered a few questions. Q: What band would you say was emo before there was emo? A: I'd have to say the Smiths and the Cure. At the time they were originally popular, they attracted a lot of Goths and kids into mope-rock, but now frontmen like Morrissey and Robert Smith are emo icons. Who knew? Q: Has the definition of emo changed or evolved since its inception? A: Totally. What once was described as a sentimental musical genre known |

GERARD WAY of MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE: YES TO BON JOVI, NO TO EMO
Journal

Fans of MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE may have been surprised when the band was tapped to open for BON JOVI next month at the christening of New Jersey's Prudential Center. But MCR frontman GERARD WAY is actually a fellow Jersey native and a big fan of JON and the boys. Speaking to the University of Maine's campus newspaper last week, Way said, quote, "I grew up as a Bon Jovi fan. Whenever you're dealing with Bon Jovi or [BRUCE] SPRINGSTEEN, it's just a great honor." On the other hand, Way wasn't so kind when talking about emo -- a musical movement that My Chemical Romance is often considered a part of. He says, quote, "I think there's bands that unfortunately we get lumped in with that are considered emo and by default that starts to make us emo... Put the records next to each other and listen to them and |

Gerard Way and co speak about their hatred of the genre
My Chemical Romance Picture: Phil Wallis My Chemical Romance have talked of their hatred of emo music. Frontman Gerard Way, talking to American college website The Maine Campus, branded emo music "shit" during the interview, speaking of his displeasure at his band being incorporated into the genre. "I think emo's a pile of shit," said Way. "I think emo is fucking garbage - it's bullshit. "I think there are bands that we get lumped in with that are considered emo and, by default, that starts to make us emo. All I can say is that anyone actually listening to the records, putting the records next to each other and listening to them, [would know there are] actually no similarities." The singer went on to talk |

(The Irish Times Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) With their most recent album, My Chemical Romance moved beyond their core goth-emo-punk fanbase and appealed for the first time to older music fans. The parade of teenage autograph hunters - mostly prize winners and the offspring of people working in the music business - talk urgently to each other as they await the band. |

'I still listen to Slayer once a week,' says frontman, chalking up new LP's serious sound, lyrics to 'musical exploration.'
"To be able to get a room to silence with an acoustic song is sometimes more powerful than all the lights and lasers and amps in the world." — Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl Dave Grohl has been in the rock business for more than 20 years now, and during that time, he's seen many so-called "musical movements" come and go. Thus, he's particularly amused by the current generation of emo-punk acts bounding across stages worldwide. After all, he's been doing this for so long that he remembers emo the first time it came around. "I have a |

Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl Photo: MTV News (Watch Dave Grohl talk about his emo past.) Dave Grohl knows all about angst and emotion. After all, he was a key part of the most angst ridden band to arguably ever don a flannel shirt. So, you would think he can relate to all the young guys like My Chemical Romance and Panic! At The Disco who wear their emotions on their sleeve while carrying the "emo" rock torch forward. And, he does. But, he also knows that sometimes you need to lighten up and just rock out. |
