The HIM vocalist spent a couple of weeks detoxing "behind bars" after his drinking had escalated to a point where he said he had two options — die of heart failure or go into rehab. Valo created the heartagram the day after his twentieth birthday. The heartagram has been falsely associated with satanism. Valo has said that "the heartagram stands for HIM as a band, as an entity, and for 'love metal' in general."
