Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl says that despite his problems with drugs and depression, Kurt Cobain was one of the funniest people he has ever met.

Grohl was speaking about the recording of Nirvana’s legendary MTV Unplugged session, available on DVD on Monday, and said that Cobain was continuously cracking jokes off camera.

The former Nirvana drummer said: “I remember it seemed like he was having a good time because a lot of talk between songs was hilariously funny

“I don’t know how many people realise it but Kurt was one of the funniest people I have ever met.”

Once upon a time, when Foo Fighters were just a twinkle in Dave Grohl's eye, there lived a certain band called Nirvana. At the time they emerged, they changed the face of popular music with frontman Kurt Cobain becoming a hero for a generation and poster boy for the grunge movement.

Rocker Dave Grohl was left heartbroken recently, when he stumbled across home movies of late Nirvana bandmate Kurt Cobain online.

Grohl, who now fronts Foo Fighters, knew immediately when the footage was taken, and realised it was at a point in Cobain's life when the singer/songwriter was extremely unhappy.

"I watched this thing on (video-sharing website) YouTube of Kurt's home movies," said Grohl.

"He's hanging around with his family in a park, sitting by this stream as these little girls run around.

"And it broke my heart, because I knew when that was, and I knew that he wasn't necessarily happy at the time...

"He couldn't fully experience the joy of life."

Cobain killed himself in 1994, aged 27.

Forthcoming film will be the first to feature band's songs

The forthcoming Kurt Cobain biopic from Universal Pictures is set to be the first Nirvana film to feature the band's music, NME.COM can reveal.

It had been reported that Universal had recently bought the rights to Charles R Cross' Cobain biography, 'Heavier Than Heaven'.

Cross has since told NME.COM that the package Universal have bought would be a combination of both the book rights and the rights to Nirvana's music, as put together by Courtney Love, who owns the rights to Nirvana's music.

THE acclaimed star of The Last King Of Scotland is being hotly tipped to play grunge icon Kurt Cobain in a movie about the Nirvana singer's life and death.

A number of Hollywood-based internet sites have claimed that 28-year-old Glaswegian James McAvoy will be offered the lead role in the rock 'n' roll biopic.

A vast array of websites insist the Scottish actor - already a big star in the US after appearing in hit blockbusters such as Atonement and The Chronicles Of Narnia - will take on the role of the revered Nirvana frontman, who shot himself in 1994.

One website claimed that McAvoy's growing reputation in Tinsel Town as a heavyweight character actor meant he was the clear favourite for the role.

The Atonement star is hotly-tipped to portray the Nirvana frontman, who committed suicide in 1994, in a film about his life, which is due to be produced by Cobain's widow Courtney Love.

A source said: "James is making a big impact in Hollywood at the moment. Hollywood bosses are convinced he is the perfect choice to play Kurt Cobain."

    BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhuanet) -- A biopic of the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain is being planned by Hollywood studio Universal, with Courtney Love, Cobain's widow serving as the executive producer, it was reported Sunday.

    Variety magazine reported that the studio has acquired the rights to a biography of Cobain, who committed suicide in 1994 at the age of 27 near the height of his grunge-rock band's success.

    Many of the details of the project are still in the early stages. But it is reported that "Troy" screenwriter David Benioff has signed on to write the screenplay, which will be based on the Charles Cross book, "Heavier than Heaven," which detailed the rise and fall of the late rocker.

Thirteen years after he committed suicide in his Seattle home, Kurt Cobain speaks again in this strikingly impressionistic documentary. The film is a collaboration between director AJ Schnack (whose aversion to punctuation accounts for both the run-on title and his own period-free initials) and journalist and author Michael Azerrad, whose 1993 book, "Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana," remains the definitive account of that great band. In the course of working on the book, Azerrad (who, I should note, is a long-time colleague) conducted some 25 hours of interviews with Kurt Cobain. These were held between December 1992 and March 1993, mostly from midnight to dawn in the house Cobain was living in at the time, in the Sand Point section…

In December 1992, Kurt Cobain and rock journalist Michael Azerrad began a series of interviews that would eventually become the beating heart of Azerrad's band biography, Come as You Are: The Story of Nirvana. For that project, Azerrad recorded over 25 hours of the rock star's musings and reflections, but until pairing with director AJ Schnack to make Kurt Cobain About a Son, had never released the tapes' contents to the public. This film, then, playing at the Varsity for just one week, is a gift to Nirvana fans, the Kurt-curious and grunge scholars everywhere.
