HOQUIAM, Wash. (AP) - The Kurt Cobain Memorial Committee is starting with a small concert to raise money for a future youth center and park in the rocker's name. They hope it can develop into a yearly celebration for the former lead singer of Nirvana, who would now be 40 years old.

"Our initial intentions were to have a February concert, but that wasn't very conducive to what we want to accomplish, which ultimately is an outdoor music festival, something along the lines of Warped Tour," said Jeff Burlingame, president of the committee.

Bands from Seattle and the surrounding area will perform Nirvana tunes at the memorial, which is being held to raise money for a youth centre and memorial park in Cobain's name. Cobain committed suicide in 1994.

An all-ages concert in Hoquiam next weekend, featuring some of the top punk and grunge rock bands in the Northwest and home-grown talent, isn’t quite a belated birthday party for the late, great Kurt Cobain. But it’s the thought that counts, and this could be the foundation for bigger things.

The Kurt Cobain Memorial Committee will stage the concert — “Lounge Acts 2007” — at 6 p.m. Saturday at the historic 7th Street Theatre. The nonprofit group is raising money for a youth center and memorial park in Cobain’s name.

As a special tribute, each band will perform a different Nirvana song.
