When Dave Grohl formed the Foo Fighters, some critics didn’t give him much chance of survival. His previous band, Nirvana, may have changed the world but, without Kurt Cobain, drummer Dave was laughed off as the “grunge Ringo” by one writer.

Twelve years later, it is Grohl, now a happily-married father and frontman of one of the world’s most in-demand rock bands, who has had the last laugh.

The Foos’ new album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, is the band’s sixth and is set to consolidate their reputation for blistering and impassioned songs which range from mindblowing sonic assaults to melodic acoustic beauties. So, not bad for the former grunge Ringo, eh Dave?

The movie splices together new footage with photographs to Cobain’s story using audio from over 25 hours of tape gleaned from interview sessions between Cobain and Michael Azzerad, author of Come As You Are: The Story Of Nirvana.

AJ Schnack's documentary Kurt Cobain: About a Son is constructed largely from interviews author/journalist Michael Azerrad conducted with the Nirvana singer/songwriter when he was writing their authorized biography, Come as You Are. About a Son is also a biography, but it relies on Cobain's own recollections, pairing it with still photos and newly shot footage of Olympia, Seattle, and Aberdeen, WA, all intended to create the perception of seeing the world through Cobain's eyes. There is no Nirvana footage in the movie and there are no Nirvana songs on the accompanying soundtrack, which instead relies heavily on songs important and influential to Kurt, along with five interview excerpts and a couple of dreamy, atmospheric instrumentals from Death Cab for…

"I did not fuck you," was how Courtney Love responded when told by her Seattle attorneys that she owed them up to $340,000 plus interest. That was the balance due on legal fees attorney Katherine Hendricks and O.Yale Lewis say Love incurred in a 2002 lawsuit against former members of her late husband's band, Nirvana, from which she ultimately earned at least $9 million. 

But the troubled rocker and widow of Kurt Cobain has now agreed to settle the attorneys' tab for an undisclosed amount, according to King County Superior Court records. The settlement, effective Monday, Sept. 17, apparently ends a three-year claim by Hendricks and Lewis, who alleged Love breached their legal-services contract. Hendricks would not discuss details of the settlement or confirm whether Love had paid her debt on time, as she agreed to do in an Aug. 28 settlement report. A trial…

Dave Grohl hasn’t tried to hide his distaste for Courtney Love over the years: In 2002, he and Krist Novoselic filed a legal motion compelling Kurt Cobain’s widow to undergo a psychiatric evaluation as they all battled over the rights to unreleased Nirvana music (he also called her an “ugly fucking bitch” at a show). Now Grohl has spoken to the Guardian about “Let it Die,” a new Foo Fighters song off the band’s forthcoming Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (out September 25; read our sneak peek here) that seems to address the former Nirvana drummer’s feelings about Cobain’s relationship with Love. The song contains the lyrics: “A simple man and his blushing bride / Intravenous, intertwined.”
