Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns rocks out during his band's set at the Townsville Entertainment Centre last night
IT finally happened. After months and months of build up, the biggest touring show to come to Townsville rocked a packed entertainment centre last night. Silverchair and Powderfinger brought their Across the Great Divide Tour to local fans and they lapped it up. Silverchair front man Daniel Johns played with the crowd, often stopping to make a quick joke. He wowed the packed house when he, at one stage, played his guitar with his teeth. The band treated fans to plenty of music from their older albums, including a couple from one of their most popular, Frogstomp. Ana's Song from their album Diorama (Neon Ballroom) was also well received. By all reports, Silverchair drummer Ben Gilles was popular with the females in his blue work singlet and `Stubbie' shorts. ABOUT 10,000 wildly enthusiastic music fans gathered under one big top last night for one of the biggest concerts to ever rock the Northern Territory. Australian music greats Silverchair and Powderfinger wowed Darwin as part of their Across the Great Divide sellout national tour. Fans and music buffs gathered from across the Territory for the spectacular. Silverchair lead singer Daniel Johns (pictured) said: "You are very lucky to live in a beautiful place like this.'' Playing the crowd, he said "there is a party going on and everybody is invited.'' "All these people (in the tent) are beautiful.'' The music supergroups were welcomed by fledgling-rockers Kisschasy. Staking out a prime viewing spot at the railing wasn't easy for Frank Plunkett, 16. The Malak teen was in place by 5pm and raged well into the night. "I got here through hard-work, determination and good looks,'' he said. "I've been waiting |

by Brian CasseyTHE tropical heat in Cairns couldn't dampen the spirits of Australia's best-known bands yesterday. The bands have been on the road together since late August and have formed a close bond. "We've known each other for more than 10 years and we all get along," said Powderfinger frontman Bernard Fanning. "It's a busy schedule but the tour's been great so far and we're looking forward to seeing Queensland." Fresh from the Northern Territory, Fanning said he was enjoying life on the road. Rolling Stone names Kurt Cobain, Mick Jones, Elliott Smith among most underrated guitarists
Journal

Rolling Stone magazine has posted a list of what they call the 25 most underrated guitarists. Taking the top spot is multi-instrumentalist Prince, with Nirvana vocalist Kurt Cobain taking the second place. The list includes a number of figures from bands like Kiss and Fleetwood Mac, but also includes The Clash's Mick Jones, The Smiths/Modest Mouse Johnny Mar, John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins and that kid from Silverchair. Statistics show that the average rock fan spends roughly 4.7 hours per year arguing over who’s the greatest guitarist of all time (see: Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time). We asked you who’s most criminally left out of those discussions — in other words, who are the most |

Too often we pass judgement on the plight of our Aboriginal brethren with apathetic flippancy. It is precisely this issue that two of Australia’s most celebrated bands have chosen to draw attention to on their latest double-headed national tour.
Watching the news in the lounge rooms of white middle-class Australia, it’s not hard to forget about our traditional ancestors. In fact, too often we pass judgement on the plight of our Aboriginal brethren with apathetic flippancy. “We’ve got much bigger problems to worry about than those binge drinking abusive layabouts, sponging off the government and wasting our taxes. What about rising interest rates and petrol prices? Or climate change? If they wanted a better life, they’d |
